Kenyans love to bet on sports, especially football markets. Recent research shows that Kenyans spent a record Sh88.5 billion on online bets in the full year to June 2023. This high record came amid heavy scrutiny of the gambling sector and punitive taxes introduced by the government.
It is estimated that the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) collected up to Sh6.64 billion in taxes. This money was paid by sportsbook operators after the government imposed a 7.5% tax on all bets.
